5 Tips and Tricks for Recovering From Dental Procedures

You’ve just gotten home from getting dental work done, and you’re feeling sore and cranky. We’ve been there. All you want to do is lay down with a cold compress and get this healing period over with.

1. Stick to Soft Foods

For the first few days after your oral surgery (or other dental procedure), it’s a good idea to stick to foods that aren’t too crunchy or chewy. Soft foods are going to be your friend here.

If your procedure was minor (like a filling), you may only have to avoid harder foods for several hours or a single day. Use your best judgment.

Pick nutritious foods like healthy protein smoothies, apple sauce, mashed potatoes, and soup. Make sure that you’re consuming enough calories.

Bonus tip: If your mouth is still numb, you should also avoid hot foods. You can burn your mouth without even realizing it. 

2. Avoid Cigarettes and Chewing Tobacco

You should always avoid tobacco products for the sake of your oral (and general) health, but it’s extra important when you’re healing from a dental procedure. 

First of all, chewing and smoking can harm the surgical site (if applicable). Smoking can even cause a dry socket if you’ve had a tooth extracted. 

Even without that factor, tobacco can delay your healing process. Now is a better time than ever to quit that unhealthy habit. 

3. Take Pain Medication

Many people resist taking pain medication after a dental procedure, but it can be seriously helpful. It will help you take your mind off of the procedure and get back to your day-to-day life.

If your dentist or surgeon prescribes heavy-duty painkillers, it’s for a good reason. If you’re unable to take those painkillers, over-the-counter pain medication will still make a big difference. 

4. Practice Good Dental Hygiene

Brushing and flossing might be difficult right after your dental procedure, but that doesn’t mean that you can neglect your dental health. You might end up with more dental procedures in the future if you’re not taking care of your mouth (for example, read about “why are root canals done“)!

Brush and floss your other teeth. With a dentist’s approval, use mouthwash to remove bacteria. Even rinsing your mouth with salt water will be beneficial. 

5. Most Important: Listen to Your Dentist

At the end of the day, the best healing advice is going to come from your dentist. While this guide should be helpful, if you’re unsure about how to speed up the healing process, your dentist (or oral surgeon) is your best resource.
