Upon stepping inside the awe-inspiring lobby beneath a giant chandelier, you would never guess the plethora of wellness amenities on offer within its storied walls.
The obvious first stop for wellness is the Peninsula Spa on the 22nd floor. Here you’ll find spacious relaxation lounges with individual music and lighting for each bed, an Asian-inspired tea lounge and 10 treatment rooms, including a spacious private spa suite. French luxury skincare line Biologique Recherche is used for their popular facials while Australian line Subtle Energies provides the aromatherapy for treatments that combine Ayurvedic methods with contemporary techniques.
Following your treatment, you’ll want to linger to experience the aromatherapy steam room and sauna. But the absolute must-visit lies on the spa’s second floor, where a glass-enclosed swimming pool glistens against the cool black tile floor and offers panoramic views of Midtown and Central Park.
Next to the pool, you’ll find the state-of-the-art fitness centre for working up a sweat with views of Midtown Manhattan. Keeping in theme with the spa’s use of natural materials, the centre features bamboo floors, teak accents and natural ambient lighting to create a soothing environment. As part of the Life Lived Best program, special fitness classes are co-hosted by local partners and fitness experts, like barre and pilates led by Physique 57 and a weekly running group with Central Park Run Club.
For those who prefer to workout in private, guests will appreciate the virtual fitness programming on their in-room television. Forgot your gear at home? “Finding even a few minutes a day of ‘me time’ can have a profound impact on our overall health and mindset, and science supports this,” says Breethe co-founder Lynne Goldberg in an official press statement. “Our aim is to make this easily achievable, even for busy travellers—and we’re thrilled to do this through our first global hotel partnership with The Peninsula Hotels.” The virtual mindfulness programming also includes bedtime stories and soothing music to help you wind down after a busy day exploring the city.
With hotels increasingly taking sleep seriously, it’s no surprise the new Life Lived Best program wants to give you your “best sleep ever.” Guests are provided with a sleep patch and essential oil by Australian Ayurvedic line Subtle Energies to help you fall asleep. But the standout experience here is the spa-style bath drawn by a Peninsula wellness expert, complete with a television built into the bathroom wall.
However you’ll probably want to turn it off to engage in the provided bath-and-bedtime ritual. It begins by adding Himalayan salt crystals infused with the soothing essences of narangi and frankincense to your steaming bath. Next, is a calm-inducing shower with Subtle Energies Tranquility Body Wash and application of the Bliss Body Blend moisturizer, with instructions on how to self-massage in a way that balances your lymphatic system and activates your sleep hormones.
